1968-04-10First Public Meeting of Gays and Lesbians in South Africa
The Homosexual Law Reform Fund convenes the first public meeting in South Africa of gays and lesbians. The group was formed, and the meeting in a Johannesburg suburb was called, in response to a legislative proposal to make being gay or lesbian in itself a criminal offense requiring compulsory imprisonment. About 100 people attended this first meeting.
1968-08-12Opening of the North American Conference of Homophile Organizations.
Lesbian and gay activists from around the country gathered in Chicago for the opening of the North American Conference of Homophile Organizations. Delegates to the conference endorsed "Gay Is Good" as a slogan for the movement.
1968-10-06First MCC service held.
In Los Angeles, 12 people attend the first service of the Metropolitan Community Church, led by Troy Perry. Over the next decade, dozens of openly LGBT-friendly MCC congregations are established across the U.S., with thousands of people attending services.
1968-12-18Le Sept Opens in Paris
Le Sept opens on Rue Sainte-Anne in Paris. Owned and operated by Fabrice Emaer, a former beautician, Le Sept became the hottest gay nightspot in Paris. Both a restaurant and nightclub, Le Sept popularized disco music in the French gay scene.
