1995-12-07 The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approves the first protease inhibitor to treat people infected with HIV

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approves the first protease inhibitor drug for the treatment of HIV infection. Approval of other protease inhibitors quickly followed. The drugs proved to be a milestone in the history of the AIDS epidemic since they proved effective for many people in curtailing the ability of the HIV retrovirus to damage human cells.
