The New York Gazette reveals that a woman named Deborah Sampson had successfully passed as a man named “Robert Shurtliff” and served in the American army for nearly three years. “She was a remarkably vigilant solider on her post,” it reported, and “she displayed herself with activity, alertness, chastity, and valour.”
