A Checklist of Homophile Articles in Justice Weekly

This annotated checklist is based on my examination of copies of Justice Weekly from its origin in 1946 to the final issue on April 15, 1972. I used the bound set at the Baldwin Collection, Marilyn and Charles Baillie Special Collections Centre, Toronto Reference Library, for January 5, 1946, to December 29, 1962, and the collection at the Library and Special Collections, Kinsey Institute, Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana, for 1963 to 1972. I was unable to examine five issues: June 20, 1964; February 6, 1965; June 17, 1967; October 5, 1968; December 27, 1969.

The checklist concentrates on original articles by Jim Egan and fiction and non-fiction articles, editorials, and letters reprinted from the U.S. homophile press (the Ladder, Mattachine Review, ONE Magazine, Tangents, and others). I have attempted to list all of these as they were published in Justice Weekly, along with the details of the original publications from which they were reprinted. Contributor pseudonyms have been identified wherever possible, using mostly “Appendix I: Index of Pseudonyms” in the two volumes of An Annotated Bibliography of Homosexuality. Eds. Vern L. Bullough, W. Dorr Legg, Barrett W. Elcano, and James Kepner (New York: Garland, 1976): 401–402; 427–35. Note that a selection of news articles have also been included. Accounts of local arrests of gay men have not been included to avoid reproducing the harm caused by these articles.

The presentation is chronological by publication in Justice Weekly. Variants in title from the original have been noted where possible. Capitalization in titles has been standardized.
