Alison Bechdel
Alison Bechdel is a Pennsylvanian born lesbian cartoon artist best known for her long running comic strip, Dykes to Watch Out For, and her autobiographical book Fun Home (2006), which was adapted for a Tony Award-winning Broadway musical. The most famous comic of Dykes to Watch Out For, The Test, is the origin of the Bechdel test, which posits that films are only worth watching if they contain two female characters who talk to each other about something other than a man. The Test was written to satirize the lack of films that fulfil such a basic requirement and is used in feminist film theory to this day. Today, Bechdel lives with her wife in Vermont, where she works as a cartoonist for Seven Days.
