Pei-Hsien Lim
Pei-Hsien Lim was a Chinese-Malaysian artist and activist for queer Asian people. After attending boarding school in Australia and immigrating to Canada as an adult, Lim became deeply aware of anti-Asian racism within white queer communities. He soon became a beloved advocate for queer people of color through his transgressive and often sexually explicit artwork. One of these was Never Again, a dance routine that Lim choreographed while working with Gay Asians of Toronto to raise money for gay men of color to legally defend themselves against police brutality. After losing his long-time partner to AIDS and receiving his own diagnosis, Lim became a cornerstone in Vancouver's safe sex movement. Shortly before his death, Lim began Dark Night of the Soul: The AIDS Journal and Poetry of Pei-Hsien Lim, detailing his declining health at the hands of a then deeply political ailment. Lim died in Vancouver, where his memorial was held on September 15, 1992, at St. Paul’s Anglican Church.
