Stonewall Riots
Dublin Core
Title
Stonewall Riots
Description
In the early morning hours of Saturday, New York City police raid the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in Greenwich Village. Patrons fought back against the police and rioting ensued, continuing for several nights. The Stonewall Riots are credited with inaugurating a new militant era of LGBT politics described as the “gay liberation” movement. The commemoration of the event with Pride Marches and Parades each year has become a global event.
