A few years before Schlittler conceived of the Out and Elected project, he had the opportunity to interview Gail Shibley, the first openly gay or lesbian person to serve in the Oregon State Legislature. She was appointed to fill a vacated term and was subsequently elected twice to the seat. The interview was published in June 1991 in The Lavender Network, a Eugene, Oregon, publication that is no longer in existence.
