Kertbeny: "Homosexual," Fall 1869
Kertbeny first publicly uses his new term "homosexuality"
by Jonathan Ned Katz
Karl Maria Kertbeny first publicly used his new term homosexuality in the fall of 1869, in an anonymous leaflet arguing against the adoption of the "unnatural fornication" law throughout a united Germany. The public proclamation of the homosexual's existence preceded the public unveiling of the heterosexual.
