Land of 10,000 Loves: A History of Queer Minnesota: by Stewart Van Cleve

Minnesota's pioneer newspapers claimed that the capitol, St. Paul, was the last city of America's east, while Minneapolis, the "Mill City," earned a reputation as the first city of the great west. Sharing the Mississippi River, the two are fraternal twins that have attracted urban and rural populations from North and South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, and eastern Wisconsin. "The cities" remain home to one of the most vibrant, involved, and diverse queer populations in the United States.

Though the contemporary geography of the "Twin Cities" suggests the influence of queer movement and activity, it also hides important queer places and events that have been demolished or forgotten.

This online exhibit displays artifacts, photographs, and stories that describe one hundred queer places in Minnesota History. Fifty sites are in St. Paul, while the other fifty are in Minneapolis; these sites are numbered and displayed on a map of both cities' historic urban cores.
