A Brief History of GAY: Canada's First Gay Tabloid, 1964-1966

This illustrated history highlights the triumphs and tribulations of publishing an openly gay periodical in Toronto in the mid-1960s, several years before the establishment of a viable Canadian gay liberation movement. GAY lasted only two years, and was in many ways a failure. But it also had ambitions, especially to develop an international following. It is incredible that in 1965, four years before Stonewall, a Toronto-based gay publication would be shipping twenty thousand copies per issue to the United States for news-stand distribution.
