Magnus Hirschfeld and a small group of others in Berlin founded the Scientific-Humanitarian Committee, which has been described as “the first homosexual emancipation organization.” Over the next generation, it became the most important gay and lesbian rights organization in the world, until it was suppressed by the Nazis in the 1930s.
