1959-10-07San Francisco Progress "Exposes" Lesbian and Gay Rights Organizations
The San Francisco Progress, a weekly neighborhood newspaper, carries a front-page story with the headline, “Sex Deviates Make S.F. Headquarters.” The paper “exposes” the existence of organizations like the Mattachine Society and the Daughters of Bilitis, gay and lesbian rights organizations whose national offices were in San Francisco. It goes on to become an issue in the campaign to elect a new mayor in San Francisco that fall.
